Former Detroit Police Chief James Craig is being encouraged to run for Michigan governor by Republican power brokers against incumbent Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, while his record is anything but conservative.

In 2013, Craig arrived in Detroit from Cincinnati, where he also was police chief. While head of the department there, Craig partnered with gun control activists, called States United to Prevent Gun Violence, in a call for “stronger gun laws.”

WCBE reported in 2013:

Craig says Congress should pass an assault weapons ban, control Internet ammunition sales and require background checks at gun shows. But Craig says he does not oppose legal gun ownership.

According to WLWT, Craig also wanted “a ban on magazines with a capacity of more than 10 rounds.” The news station said Craig argued “Gun laws need more teeth.”

In 2012, Craig said “the country needs to do a better job restricting gun sales,” WVXU reported, and stated his opposition to arming school employees.

“Certainly we can look at other options, but when you talk about arming school teachers or a school administrator without the appropriate training, and training is not just going to a target range and being able to hit center mass,” Craig said. “How do you deal with a crisis? We’re talking about a place with children.”

Craig’s positions put him in line with leading Democrats, such as President Joe Biden and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who are once against calling for restrictions to the Second Amendment.

“Magazines holding more than 10 rounds are used in assault rifles, which the gun industry calls modern sporting rifles, and which are targeted in Biden’s proposed ban,” Forbes said in March.

Congressional Democrats have already effectively heeded Craig’s call when they introduced a bill to limit magazines to 10 rounds.

“There’s no reason why anyone, other than military, needs a gun magazine that holds more than 10 rounds,” Democrat U.S. Rep. Diana DeGette said, according to Fox News. “It’s past time for Congress to act on common-sense gun safety measures such as this. Banning the sale of high-capacity magazines in this country will save lives and Congress needs to act on this legislation immediately.”

Democrats are also siding with Craig by plotting to ban “assault weapons.”

Biden has called for legislation that would “prevent manufacturers from circumventing the law by making minor changes that don’t limit the weapon’s lethality,” CBS 8 reported.
