Seattle, WA – Early Sunday morning, an off duty police officer stopped to assist a driver who had been in an accident when another vehicle struck the officer and killed her.

The accident occurred on the I-5 Freeway where there had been a 13 car collision near the S. Forest Street exit. Officer Lexi Harris had just gotten off duty and stopped to assist people who had been involved in the multi-vehicle accident.
“It’s devastating. It’s very difficult for all of us. Piggy-baking to what Captain Mead said, to lose anyone in this manner would be devastating. But when it’s somebody committed to public safety, trying to do the right thing when they could have just kept going.” – Assistant Seattle Police Chief Tom Mahaffey
Another vehicle that was not involved in the accident struck Officer Harris, killing her. The driver of the vehicle was cooperative and did not leave the scene. However an individual that had been involved in the multi vehicle collision stole Officer Harris’s car. The car was eventually recovered but the suspect who took it has yet to be found.
Officer Harris was a 5 year veteran with the Seattle Police Department.
