Joe Biden met with Queen Elizabeth for the first time as president over the weekend, and she was seemingly snubbed by him after he was ordered “not to bow” to her.
The Express [1] reported that Biden and his wife Jill met with the Queen after the end of the G7 summit in Cornwall.
“I don’t think she’d be insulted but she reminded me of my mother, the look of her and just the generosity,” Biden said of the 95 year-old monarch.
The White House has since revealed that Biden had previously met the Queen when he was a young senator back in 1982. At the time, his mother gave him a piece of advice, which was, “Don’t you bow down to her.”
Reports state that Biden did not bow to the Queen over the weekend, which some saw as a snub of the monarch.
“Aren’t people supposed to bow or curtsy as a form of respect to the Queen? Just curious,” said one social media user, with another adding, “Is there a reason Biden and his wife didn’t bow for the Queen?”
“They were supposed to curtsy and bow to her. Don’t they have any manors?” a third user commented.
While there is no official piece of royal protocol that calls for people to bow to the Queen, many choose to do so anyway as a sign of respect to her.
This comes after we reported that the Biden’s broke a piece of royal protocol stating that members of the royal family should be the last ones to arrive at an event, and the first ones to leave it. However, the Biden’s arrived at the reception a few minutes after the Queen did.
A royal expert spoke out to warn that “everyone” should arrive before the royals at ceremonial events, and no one should leave before them at the end. British professional coaching company Debrett’s specifically says, “It is correct for everyone to arrive before the royal personage and protocol rules that no guest should leave an event before a member of the Royal Family.”
Despite the fact that the Biden’s broke the protocol, the Queen was still all smiles when she met with them.
